Avonside Girls create Whāriki artworks
July 2017
‘Nga whāriki manaaki’ are mats that use traditional Raranga weaving techniques. A series of 13 Whāriki are being installed within the Otākaro / Avon River Precinct. Positioned near the river, each Whāriki is an arrangement of natural stone pavers.
Three Whāriki are in place already. Find them at Bridge of Remembrance, Cambridge Terrace, and at the Margaret Mahy Family Playground.
There will be 13 in total along the Avon River, each with a unique story.
Avonside Girls' High School recently took the opportunity to learn about the Whāriki. Students created their own artworks to express their school story.
