Horatio Street and part of Balfour Terrace to close
February 2017
Horatio Street and the bulk of Balfour Terrace from Antigua Street will be permanently closed from Friday 10 February to allow work to continue on the Metro Sport Facility Site.
A new entrance to businesses at the western end of Balfour Terrace has been created from Stewart Street. These street closures will result in the loss of some on-street parking.
Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley says remediation work on the site is progressing well.
“These two streets run through the middle of the site and the time has come to remove the roads and the services underneath them in preparation for major site works beginning later this year,” says Mr Brantley.
The Metro Sports Facility will include a 50 metre, 10-lane competition swimming pool and a separate diving pool, large aquatic leisure area, five hydroslides, fitness spaces and nine indoor courts for sports such as netball and basketball. It will be a venue that will grow participation in sport and recreation in Canterbury and provide facilities to support athlete high-performance.
The Metro Sports Facility will be completed early in 2020.
