Next section of Avon River Precinct works starting soon

Work on the next stage of Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct will begin on 12 June along the section of Oxford Terrace between Hereford and Worcester Streets.

This will be a continuation of the paving, planting and seating work already completed in the Terraces area between Cashel and Hereford Streets.

“The people of Christchurch and visitors are already enjoying the section at the Terraces. They eat their lunch, talk, enjoy the scenery or feed the eels,” says Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive Albert Brantley.

“Construction of the private developments in the area is progressing well so it is a good time to be expanding the river precinct.”

Oxford Terrace between Hereford and Worcester Streets will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians for about six months while the work is carried out.

“Many cities use promenades to create special features of their rivers. This is the Christchurch version, unique to this city and our Avon River,” says Mr Brantley.

When completed, 50,000m2 of paved shared space will form a lit city promenade running along the Oxford Terrace side of the river from the hospital to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground.

Contractors are making good progress on the blocks between Cashel and Montreal Streets, with work expected to be completed in this area by Christmas.

“Completing this section of the promenade will further enhance the Earthquake Memorial and create a clear path to the future Riverside Farmer’s Market, so it will become a really appealing part of the central city,” says Mr Brantley.
