One block of Colombo Street temporarily one lane from next Wednesday
November 2017
Colombo Street will temporarily be one-way, north-bound only, from Armagh Street to Kilmore Street from Wednesday 6 December 2017.
This section of Colombo Street forms part of the new 2.5 kilometre riverside promenade that will extend from the Antigua Street boatsheds through to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground. Work to restore Victoria Square and upgrade this section of street mean there is construction on both sides of the road, temporarily limiting the space available for cars.
Southbound access will still be available along Durham and Manchester Streets. Colombo Street will be reopened to two lanes around May 2018.
Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley thanks people for their ongoing patience while the work is carried out.
“We have to get as much work done as possible while the weather is good. Warm, dry weather is needed to build high-quality road surfaces that last.”
“This is not a simple road resurfacing job. Victoria Square and this section of Colombo Street have suffered significant levels of subsidence towards the river so a lot of work is required to stabilise the carriageway,” says Mr Brantley.
The next stages of the Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct will be open at the end of the year. Victoria Square is expected to be reopened to the public in March 2018.
